A undergraduate essay by Denise Thole titled "Sue the Obscure: Was Thomas Hardy's Gentle Lily a Lesbian?" published at the University of South Dakota in Coyote: An Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Journal.
COMMENT:
This six-paragraph essay, with list of five works cited (all but one before 1980), does not mention Hardy's own comments on Sue's sexuality but, by a strained interpretation of one sentence in the novel, concludes that Sue "felt that her best opportunity for a complete, affectionate relationship was with another woman only."
