Alibris provides an online catalogue for a network of sellers of out of print and rare books, and now includes the vendors previously associated with Bibliocity. It claims to offer "millions" of titles. If desired, searches can be limited to offerings added to the database during the last day, week or two-week period; they may be made by author, title, subject, or keyword(s). Entries can include title, author, publisher, year, price, and descriptive detail.
COMMENT:
Searches are exceptionally fast, and the database is relatively large for the used book trade. An author search for "Thomas Hardy" yielded 214 offerings of books by Hardy; a subject search for "Thomas Hardy" yielded 318 items both by and about Hardy. Most offerings were in the $12-$100 range, but a few over $1000. Entries vary greatly in both fullness and accuracy of bibliographic detail supplied as well as of description of condition. The offering bookseller is not identified, and some of these are so lax about detail as to omit such significant bibliographic data as date of publication, or are so careless about spelling and capitalization as to use "D'urber-villes" or "d'urbervbilles" in the title of Tess. Bookcover or bookjacket pictures may not be of the book offered for purchace, nor may some descriptive details.
