Amazon.com provides access to an electronic catalogue it claims
to include more than 2.5 million titles of books and audio cassettes; links are also provided to catalogues in the United Kingdom (http://www.amazon.co.uk) and in Germany (http://www.amazon.de).
Titles may or may not be available for sale, and some are
described as not yet published. The catalogue may be searched by
author, title, and subject word. Results of
searches are displayed in groups of 50 titles and can include
information about the estimated time taken to ship an item,
ranging from twenty-four hours to up to six weeks or more.
Prices, when stated, sometimes include claims of savings in both
currency and percentage amounts.
COMMENT:
Catalogue entries vary greatly in fullness of
information provided, in details about availability, and in
price. Citations may be inaccurate, and information provided
ranges from relatively full bibliographic details to nothing more
than an author and title. Entries can include titles directly
available from Amazon.com (these are often claimed to be priced
advantageously); or "special orders" (sometimes with a
price surcharge added); or titles available from the publisher at
list price; or unpriced "out of print" items, in which
case Amazon.com sometimes includes an offer to search its network
of used bookstores. An book author search on 06/18/02 using "Thomas Hardy" yielded a list of 216 titles; a title search using the same name yielded 394 hits. A substantial portion of the titles found were, however, not directly
available from Amazon.com (and included no claim of price
advantage), or were out of print and not reliably available at
all.
