The Chadwyck-Healey Company is a division of ProQuest. This "Literature Online" page offers--by library or individual subscription--access to a collection of 300,000 texts of works of English and American literature, either online or by CD-ROM. The following quotations are from the Chadwyck-Healey offering of this service:

"Researchers can access the full text of poetry, drama, and prose fiction from 600 AD to the present day. Contemporary criticism is available through the full text of 61 current literature journals that can be accessed through the renowned Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL). In addition, Literature Online offers a cross-searchable reference shelf that incorporates dictionaries of terms and encyclopedias such as The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Literary Terms and The New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics. It also provides a comprehensive indexing of websites, bibliographic information, and background information on authors and their works."

"Literature Online increases its coverage by offering hyperlinks to other relevant websites. From further texts of literary works to information on individual authors to discussion groups devoted to literary topics, this tool greatly expands a user's research capabilities."

"A number of simple search methods make it easy for researchers to find the information they want. Users can search by keyword, author's name, nationality, publication date, literary movement, literary period, and gender. Every work can be searched individually, or in combination with hundreds of other works from the same or from different genres."

COMMENT:

The Chadwyck-Healey database includes the 1930 text of Hardy's Collected Poems. See, also, the Columbia University Project Bartleby collection (TTHA Link A 29) and the University of Virginia archive (TTHA Link http://www.fredonia.edu/hardysoc/linkstwo/virginia.htm), which include scholarly hypertext editions of works by such contemporaries of Hardy's as Lewis Carroll and A.E. Housman, as well as other scholarly hypertexts in Project Bartelby to which the Virginia archive links. Members of the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) can also use the Chadwyck-Healey English Poetry Database, AD 600-1900, and the entire database, or its poetry sub-part, is also available at many other major academic libraries.
