Ebay provides an electronic auction forum where, after registering, persons over 18 years old can both bid on and offer items for auction. Rules and procedures are set forth at the site, and a search engine is provided to locate items currently being auctioned. A fee usually ranging from .25% to 5% of the final price is charged to sellers; buyers pay no auction fee. Items auctioned are described by the individual sellers. Those related to Hardy have included books, magazines, CD ROMs, cassettes, and maps.
COMMENT:
Items offered for auction change constantly. On 04/10/03, a search for "Thomas Hardy" (the name entered within quotation marks is treated by the search engine as a unitary phrase) yielded 90 items being auctioned. To judge from the Hardy offerings, this service appears to be used mostly by non-professionals, and descriptions of books often appear to be naive and uninformed. But bargains in Hardy items may also occasionally be found, and at least one Hardy book collector has found the service convenient for selling off duplicates, though it is not likely to bring top prices for truly rare items.
