Access to Archives (abbreviated "A2A") is the English strand of the UK archives network whose home web page http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk gives access to the Public Record Office and Historical Records Commission documents. This A2A database contains catalogues describing over 340 archives (other those of the PRO and HRC) held throughout England and dating from the 900's to the present. The contents of the archives are searchable electronically.

COMMENT:

A search for "Thomas Hardy" provided citations to entries in 152 catalogues--many, of course, to persons other than the author Thomas Hardy (1840-1928). The search results are presented first in the form of a list of catalogues having mention of Thomas Hardy (with the number of hits in each catalogue). Clicking on any one of the catalogues gives the location of the archive and brings up brief citations of the relevant text from the catalogue, along with an indication of their availablity. For example, the archives of St Juliot Parish are stated to be located in the Cornwall Record Office (with a link to that office's web site); the words, "with notes on restoration of St. Juliot Church 1869-72, possibly in handwriting of Thomas Hardy . . . ."; and an indication that the archive is immediately available for research.
