"Ingenta", UK, has merged with the UnCover Corporation, USA, to provide a searchable database claimed to include nearly 14 million articles in over 27,000 publications, as well as 4,500 electronic journals. The full service available by subscription only, but is widely provided to users of academic libraries. Searches may be made by keyword, author/name, or journal title, and limited to specific dates. Article records provide full bibligraphic information. Searchers may order fax copies of full-text articles for a service charge, with possible additional costs for overseas fax surcharge and for copyright fee. Additional related available services include UnCover/Reveal, an automated delivery of the table of contents of the new issues of such journals as a user may select--up to 50 in all---to a personal email account. UnCover/Reveal also allows for up to 25 automatic keyword or author searches of its periodical database, and, again, results are sent to a personal email account.

COMMENT:

On 06/23/01, an ingenta/UnCover search for "Thomas Hardy" yielded 21 citations of journal articles published in 2000 and 2001; a search for "Hardy" for the same period produced 190 hits--though many, of course, were not relevant to Thomas Hardy (1840-1928).

The journals covered by ingenta include many of high quality, including Cahiers Victoriens et Edouardiens, Cambridge Quarterly, College English, Critical Quarterly, ELH, English Language Notes, English Studies, Essays in Criticism, Explicator, Journal of Preraphaelite Studies, Literature and Psychology, Modern Language Quarterly, Modern Philology, New Literary History, Nineteenth-Century Contexts, Nineteenth-Century Literature, Nineteenth-Century Studies, Philological Quarterly, Philosophy and Literature, PN Review, Review of English Studies, SEL 1500-1900, Studies in Philology, Studies in the Novel, Texas Studies in Literature and Language, The Thomas Hardy Journal, Colby Library Quarterly, The Modern Language Journal, Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, University of Toronto Quarterly, Victorian Culture and Literature, Victorian Newsletter, Victorian Periodicals Review, Victorian Poetry, and Victorian Studies. Another advantage of the service is the possibility of securing fax copies quickly--though many journals in the database do not permit this.

Of great utility for what the UnCover/Reveal service can provide: (1) immediate delivery by email of the tables of contents of each new issue of up to 50 selected journals of high quality as soon as they are published and (2) automatic keyword searches of the database with, again, citations sent to your email account.

SUMMARY:

Valuable particularly for its extensive database and for the Uncover/Reveal service. For another very wide indexing of periodicals--but without the automatic search features--see our Link B 13, World Wide Catalogs, which provides information about OCLC "First Search," with its extensive search and document ordering capabilities.
