  1. The "OCLC First Search" page includes "WorldCat"--OCLC's Online Union Catalog of more than 41 million records of all types held by some 20,000 libraries in 61 countries and territories--plus databases of more than 13,000 journals and other reference materials, with extensive search capabilities and document ordering. The databases include Books in Print, the MLA Bibliography, and the following databases possibly relevant to Hardy research:
    • Articles First, an index of tables of contents of 12,000 journals, with full-text availability.
    • Contents First, an index of tables of contents from 12500 "leading journals", but with no full-text availability.
    • Humanities Abstracts, an index of 465 sources, with full-text access.
    • ECO, an index to 3000 scholarly journals, with full-text access.
    • Papers First, an index to over 2,000,000 records of papers presented at conferences, but with no text access.
    • Reader's Guide Abstracts, an index to over 300 popular magazines.
    • OCLC Union Lists of Periodicals.
Access to the OCLC FirstSearch databases at this University of Virginia site is by user ID and password. But most other academic libraries provide such access to faculty and students. In addition, selecting the URL for library catalogue search resources at the University of Virginia site gives access to a host of other web sites useful for searching library catalogues, including the following:
  2. "Lib-Web-Cats," a directory of more than 4,000 library web pages which is searchable by keyword, library type, or geographic location.
  3. "Libdex: The Library Index," which enables either searching or browsing 17,000 library web catalogues in over 120 countries and about 100 sites of book vendors.
  4. "Libweb," which gives access to the home pages of over 3,000 libraries in 90 countries.
  5. "British Library Catalogue."
  6. "COPAC: University Research Library Catalogue," which provides a union list of the holdings of 16 major UK and Irish Universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, and the University of London.
  7. "Library of Congress Catalogue."

COMMENT:

The above is only a partial listing of the resources for obtaining information about library catalogues around the world. Other links are to such things as Web-accessible national libraries, public library websites, research library websites, archive and manuscript databases, and much more.

Together, this wide variety of sources provides overlapping and complementary databases, and together gives very comprehensive access to electronic library catalogs worldwide, as well as information about contacting libraries with non-electronic catalogues. In addition, it provides a comprehensive index to publisher's on-line catalogues worldwide.

SUMMARY:

These pages maintained by University of Virginia Library provide at one convenient address the essential tools for accessing electronic library catalogs and other databases relevant for Hardy scholarship around the world. The OCLC FirstSearch databases are widely available to scholars at the academic libraries of the institutions with which they are affiliated.
