"The Exploding Dictionary"--now retitled "Hyperdictionary" consists of a set of more than 200 dictionaries and dictionary-like reference works--e.g., gazetteers, Bible dictionaries, etc.--available as electronic databases. These are cross-referenced and can be searched for definitions of a given word. Results are displayed beneath headings for each dictionary in which the word is found.

COMMENT:

The dictionaries are identified only by a brief citation--e.g., "Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913)," "Wordnet," "Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary"--but the definitions provided are full. A search for the word peculiar yielded citations from four sources; a search for the word unbe yielded only a definition from the "Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913)." The reference works searched are mostly out of date and do not include such works as the OED, but many are contemporaneous with Hardy.
