VICTORIA is an electronic discussion list devoted to issues
relevant to the study of Britain from 1790 to 1914. From the
opening page of this web site, use the "Search
VICTORIA" option to locate the text of discussions from 1993 to the present. The opening page also
provides links to other Victorian-related electronic discussion
groups and to information about--and links
to--"Archives," "Libraries,"
"Journals," "Discussion," "Teaching," "Lists,"
"Planning a Research Trip," and "Other Victorian Resources." The
"Archives" page supplies general information on
archival reference works, as well as specific guides to the
Historical Manuscripts Commission, the Public Record Office,
archives of Victorian materials, and Victorian publishers'
records. "Libraries" provides easy access to online
catalogues of American and British libraries, solid information
about bibliographies both print and electronic, and knowledgeable
and current information about using the British Library's
collection. "Other Victorian Resources" supplies brief descriptions of, and
links to, general on-line guides to Victorian studies as well as
to many specific research projects and discussion groups.
"Teaching" reproduces the syllabi for various
Victorian-related courses, while "Planning a Research Trip" leads to many
links to online resources for planning research trips, as well as
other useful guidance for the researcher going abroad.
COMMENT:
Hardy researchers can use the "Search VICTORIA" option
to retrieve information on discussions related to Hardy and any
relevant sub-topic, with options to search for particular dates. Between 1993 and 2001, for example, there are
over a thousand mentions of "Hardy" in postings to the list. Such references may range from extended
discussions to mere mentions of the term searched for. In still other
respects, this is an exceptionally valuable reference guide to sources both
on and off line, with particular emphasis on--and links to--a
wide range of valuable electronic reference materials.
