A syllabus divided into eleven parts:
 
1. Texts--5 Hardy novels and 5 Conrad novels
2. Assessment--proportions of performance on various tasks related to the final grade
3. Aims and Objectives
4. The Internet and the Course Discussion Groups--explanation of how the class can use an electronic course discussion group and the Internet;
5. Class Schedule--a week-by-week schedule of course topics
6. Hardy Topics--a highly selective reading list arranged by individual novel
7. Hardy Reading List--a brief bibliography of books and collections of essays
8. Hardy: Essay Titles--a list of 6 essay topics drawn from statements by different critics
9. Hardy: Heavy Demand--a list of books placed in a special in a "special demand" category for library loans
10. Conrad Criticism--a list of books arranged under the headings "Biography," Letters," "Criticism," and "Texts"
11. Student Home Pages--a list which allows students to click on to the WWW home pages of other students in the class.
