DESCRIPTION:

A syllabus divided into five main parts:

  1. An introductory statement of the focus of the seminar.
  2. A list of required texts (seven novels, Wessex Tales, Life's Little Ironies and selected poems).
  3. "Common Problems and Themes We Will Approach This Semester"
  4. Course Requirements
  5. Reading Schedule (Weekly, for 16 weeks).

ADDITIONAL REMARKS:

These comments conclude the introductory statement: "No doubt, the dramatic historical transformations of the 19th century are central to Hardy's work. But as we shall see, the writings are much more than merely reflective of those transformations. Ultimately, the rhetoric(s) of Hardy's writing can be seen as symbolic actions that seek to perform various types of cultural work. It is this variable tendency that we will try to get a hold of this semester."
