Indie band appeals to locals

The indie rock genre is currently growing faster than ever, with many new bands, such as Nate in Public, coming out of the woodwork to show audience their skills. The indie/rock/alternative band first formed in high school and now with its members in different colleges, they continue to make music.

Bill Beck, a junior philosophy major, play lead vocals for the band. "Some of our influences were As Tall as Lions, Radiohead, The Mars Volta, At the Drive In, The Snake, The Cross, The Crown and Saves the Day,"Beck said.

The music of Nate in Public is well-constructed and the interesting vocals are what make the band stand out and adds to their original appeal.

"They have a real original flavor," said freshmen criminal justice major Matt Levinger. "It doesn't really relate to anything mainstream."

The band has also made quite an impression at BJ's, the local bar, which regularly books bands to play. "Their first show was packed," said BJ's owner Rob Clark, while also remarking that they opened for a well-known Fredonia favorite, Gonculator.

Nate in Public has a number of singles including "Written Somewhere in History" and "Mexican Pocket Guide" on CD. They are also currently working on releasing their full album entitled Coming Home.

"It will have I think 11 tracks and will hopefully be out by Christmas," said Beck. "We hope to promote this new CD as much as possible and play as much as we can.

The band's next show will be Nov. 29 at BJ's for the Jamnesty event. This event has occurred at BJ's for the past four years and is sponsored by the Amnesty International chapter at Fredonia.
