Women's soccer season comes
to an end with SUNYAC defeat
Sports Brief
The women's soccer team watched
their SUNYAC (SUNY Athletic
Conference) playoff dreams come to an
end with their loss against Brockport on
Saturday Oct. 20.
The Blue Devils came out strong
and dominated most of the game, but a
late second half goal by Brockport sealed
the victory. The loss eliminated Fredonia
from SUNYAC postseason play.
"Our team had really great chemistry
and we were in every game this
year," said freshman midfielder Rachel
Mimken. "We just had a tough time finishing
throughout the season."
The Blue Devils ended the regular
season on a strong note, defeating
Oberlin College 1-0 on Saturday Oct.
27. Sophomore forward Lauren Heilweil
connected on a pass from junior midfielder
Kaelyn Puidoka halfway through
the second half. The goal would soon
turn out to be the game winner.
Heilweil's goal tied her with senior
defender Danielle Bleeker for the team
lead at seven goals. For Bleeker, this
was her last home game of her career at
Fredonia.
Sophomore midfielder Lisa Curtis
describes Bleeker as a team leader, influencing
the team off and on the field with
her actions and her playing.
"Not only has she been our anchor
on defense, but a huge asset to our
offense as well," said Curtis. "She comes
up from out of the back and is our biggest
threat on corner kicks. She is a huge
motivator for the team before the game
and continues to inspire us through out
the game."
Fredonia completed the regular season
with a SUNYAC record of 4-4-3 and
an overall winning record of 8-7-3.
