Men's hockey team gains momentum from win to earn success in away games

The Blue Devils were able to carry the momentum from their most recent home game to allow for improved standings in both the SUNYAC and overall records. After winning a close match, full of back and forth scoring against Buffalo State on Friday Nov. 16, Fredonia was able to carry the momentum into upcoming away games.

The men's hockey team was able to light up the scoreboard first against the Cortland Red Dragons on Friday Nov. 30, but did not stop there. Fredonia continued the lead with two more unanswered goals, allowing the score to read 3-0 going into the second period.

Freshman forward Andrew Hess opened scoring opportunities for the Blue Devils with his impressive wrist shot. Freshman forward Jordan Oye and junior forward Bryan Goudy then followed him with one goal each. Freshman forward Alex Morton and senior forward Neal Sheehan were credited with the assists.

Cortland finally answered the Blue Devils with a pair of goals but their scoring would end there and Fredonia came out on top with a final score of 6-2. Sophomore goaltender Pat Street had 18 saves on the Red Dragons while his teammates out shot Cortland 23-20.

After their impressive win, the men's hockey team skated against the Oswego Lakers the following night. Continuing the trend of scoring first, as they did the previous night, the Blue Devils gained the first lead of the game with two consecutive goals scored by Goudy and sophomore forward James Muscatello. The Lakers bounced back with two goals of their own, allowing the scoreboard to read 2-2 after the first period.

Though both teams were unable to come up with a goal in the second period, the Blue Devils would score next halfway into the third period, only to gain the lead for the second and last time. A Fredonia penalty helped contribute to Oswego's third goal but neither team was able to score goal in the sudden death overtime, allowing the final score to remain at 3-3. Junior goaltender Kevin Amborski made a notable 34 saves for the Blue Devils.

Fredonia's record now stand at 5-5-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the SUNYAC. The men's hockey team will take on Wentworth at 7 p.m. on Friday Jan. 5 at home.
