Blue Devils suffer close loss against Cortland, bounce back with first win of the season

The men's basketball team recently played host to the Cortland Red Dragons in their fourth game of the 2007-08 season. Cortland, one of Fredonia's toughest competitors, came into the game having knocked off nationally ranked Baldwin- Wallace last week in the Penn State-Behrend Tournament. Men's hockey team gains momentum from win to earn success in away games

The Blue Devils were able to carry the momentum from their most recent home game to allow for improved standings in both the SUNYAC and overall records. After winning a close match, full of back and forth scoring against Buffalo State on Friday Nov. 16, Fredonia was able to carry the momentum into upcoming away games.

On the road until January, Blue Devils take advantage of home ice

The Blue Devils faced Buffalo State in their last home game until January on Friday Nov. 16. Unable to produce a win since Nov. 2, Fredonia was looking to come out on top to remain ahead of the Buffalo State Bengals in SUNY Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) standings.

"We have been needing to take our program in a different direction," said Head Coach Jeff Meredith. "That means having more athletes here to compete hard and keep at it." click to read more

Women's basketball team begins new season, Kindzia reaches 1,000th point

After ending their season with a SUNYAC loss last year, the women's basketball team started the 2007-08 season with high hopes for future success.

Despite beginning the regular season with a loss against the Ohio team Notre Dame, the Blue Devils managed to bounce back and win their home opener on Tuesday Nov. 20 against D'Youville College. read more

"Ice Bowl" creates hype for Sabres and Penguins fans, face-off to take place on New Year's day

The National Hockey League (NHL) gave a new definition to the coined slogan "take it outside" with an announcement that would make NHL history. The Buffalo Sabres will host the first NHL outdoor hockey game ever played in the United States, the second in the world. read more

Men's hockey team sustains defensive pressure on Potsdam

The Fredonia men's hockey team participated in back-to-back games entering the second weekend of November. Coming off of a tough away loss to Geneseo, the Blue Devils were looking for a ray of hope as they faced the Potsdam Bears on Friday Nov. 9.

Blue Devils fall short in home meet against Geneseo
Co-ed swimming and diving teams remain positive, set personal records

Fredonia's Co-ed swimming and diving teams headed into one of their toughest meets of the season as they faced the Geneseo Knights on Saturday Nov. 3. Both teams were clinching a 1-1 record, looking for a win to secure their record.

Upperclassmen divers gave hope to both the men and women's sides. Senior diver Scott Horsington continued his success, as he set a new pool mark for the men's 1-meter springboard with a six-dive score of 274.85 points. Men's soccer team snags Championship crown

For the first time in 10 years, the Blue Devils were able to call themselves SUNY Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) champions as they gained the title in a game against the Plattsburgh Cardinals.

Blue Devils bounce back from overtime loss with inspiring win

It was a big weekend for the men's hockey team as they participated in their season home openers against the Utica Pioneers on Friday Oct. 26. The presentation of the 2006-07 SUNY Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship banner was then given to Fredonia on Saturday night for the team's winning efforts last year in the playoffs.

Women's volleyball team uses home court advantage to continue winning streak

On Friday Oct. 19, Fredonia hosted the SUNY Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Pool Play, a competition between teams in the Western Division. The women's volleyball team gave the home crowd a performance worth cheering about.

In the opening match, Fredonia took on the Morrisville Mustangs. The Blue Devils came in strong, leaving Morrisville with three consecutive losses, 30-22, 30-17 and 30-21. Junior outside hitter Leanne Maloney led Fredonia with 12 kills and 15 digs....click to read more

Swimming and diving team begins season on the right foot

Fredonia's co-ed swimming and diving team started the 2007-08 season with a meet against Morrisville State on Saturday, Oct. 20.

"It is an exciting time to be a diver at Fredonia," said senior diver Scott Horsington. "We are all anticipating a great season with a brand new team."

Horsington created a new one-meter springboard diving mark and qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) by exceeding the one-meter diving with an impressive score of 266.40.

Blue Devils earn SUNYAC recognition, wrap up season with positive attitude

The women's tennis team had a challenging year as they faced tough competitors such as Oneonta and Penn State Behrend throughout the season.

The Blue Devils made sure to maintain composure after every loss, never allowing negative outcomes to prevail over the positive ones.

"Our team is just as good as any other," said junior Elise Daigler. "This season we just had trouble keeping the momentum going far enough to close out each match with a win. Each individual player showed tremendous improvement."

Many sports fans may remember the 2000 Sydney Olympics as an international landmark for females as Marion Jones became one of the most accomplished athletes in the world. Jones’ achievements became a female Summer Olympics record, a landmark in the history of sports. "I looked up to her a lot in high school despite the controversy around her on more than one occasion," said sophomore thrower Julia Hopson, of Fredonia's women’s track team. In the midst of allegations of using drugs during this time, Jones still walked away from the Olympics with two bronze medals and three gold medals for her achievements in track and field. Friday's series of matches started off the Blue Devil Invitational with Fredonia first facing Rochester. Junior outside hitter Leanne Maloney added 11 kills and 18 digs to her record, while junior outside hitter Amy Bertrando and freshman middle hitter Kaitlin Erdmann each had 10 kills. On the Fredonia Athletics Web page, students can find a complete list of the sports offered to both males and females. The link for cheerleading is placed under the category of female, despite sophomore Dan Kennedy's involvement in the team last year. When Kennedy first came to Fredonia, he informed Head Coach Katie Pucci-Schaefer that he did not plan on cheering his freshman year.
