Juvenile Collection - Collection Development Policy

The Juvenile Collection at Reed Library supports the education curriculum of the College. The Juvenile Collection directly supports course work preparing students to meet the requirements for an education degree. Housed as a separate collection the following reflect the Collection Development policy specifically for the Juvenile Collection.

Priority purchases will include classic works of children's literature and current winners of literary awards, including but not limited to the Newbery, Caldecott, Coretta Scott King, etc. awards. The policy stipulates that the Library purchase one copy of each award winning and honor book, with the exception of two copies of the award winners of the Caldecott and Newbery Awards.

Books appropriate for the preschool child through young adult are included in the collection and may come in a variety of formats. Non tradition formats include but are not limited to picture books, big books, compact disks, recordings, multimedia kits, card sets, etc. The Librarian assigned to maintaining the Juvenile Collection will make all decisions regarding book selection, retention and receipt of gifts and other materials to the Collection.

Books purchased for the Juvenile Collection are exempt from the policy of not purchasing if owned by another SUNY institution.

Juvenile Books will retain all paper covers and will be covered with a protective covering to prevent damage to the cover.
