Stefan Zweig Collection

This internationally known Collection in Reed Library at the State University of New York, College at Fredonia contains published novels, short stories, plays, poems, essays, correspondence and other writings by this renown Austrian author who was born in 1881 and died in 1942. His works were translated into over fifty languages of which the Library has a good sampling. Other works in the Collection record the turbulent yearsStefan Zweig Image of the first part of the Twentieth Century and other related materials.

The collection also includes numerous biographies of Stefan Zweig who was known in the literary community as a humanitarian thinker. The multilingual critical studies explicate his writings on which he tirelessly labored until he tragically ended his life. Published works of other authors who were connected with Zweig's circle are likewise represented. The Stefan Zweig Manuscript Correspondence is the most valuable part of the Zweig Collection. It consists of over 6,000 letters that were written between 1901-1942 to Zweig by over 300 eminent personalities. Among them are Martin Buber, Albert Schweitzer, Richard Strauss, Rainer Maria Rilke, Luigi Pirandello, Jules Romains, Joseph Roth, Frans Masereel and others. Many a researcher and Zweig aficionado around the world use this unique collection for research and publication. The Zweig Collection also contains nearly 2000 manuscript letters that were exchanged between the author and his first wife Friderike. About half of these letters were published in 1954. A new comprehensive edition of the correspondence will be published in the upcoming decade. In addition, a small collection of published books by Friderike and some letters that were written to her are also in this Collection. Another axillary is the Alfred Zweig Collection of a small group of letters, memorabilia and photographs that were donated to Reed Library in 1979 after the death of Stefan's brother, Alfred. The Inventory of the Stefan Zweig Collection is an itemized list to the above collections. It also includes a group of uncataloged miscellaneous materials such as articles by and about Zweig, theatre programs and reviews of Zweig's plays, book reviews, media material and memorabilia. The extensive introduction reveals the history of the collection and gives useful hints to researchers.
