Financial Aid: Summer Sessions 2010

Federal and State financial aid is available for students who will be enrolled at Fredonia during Summer 2010. Students applying for financial aid must complete the 2010-11 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application on line at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. Additionally, students must complete the Summer School Financial Aid Application and return it to the Financial Aid Office.  Visit the Financial Aid Website for more information on applying for summer financial aid.

What types of aid are available?

NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)

  • Must be a New York State resident.
  • Must be enrolled a minimum of 6 credit hours during Summer I and/or Summer II and meet New York State income guidelines and be taking classes at SUNY Fredonia in the summer.
  • Must have accrued 24 credit hours in the previous two consecutive semesters at SUNY Fredonia.
  • Cannot be used as a credit toward direct summer charges (tuition/fees).
  • Not paid to you until October 2011 as per New York State TAP regulations.

FEDERAL PELL GRANT

  • Must meet PELL eligibility requirements.
  • Only used as credit toward your bill if it is an authorized amount.
  • Pell will not be paid and potentially refunded until the middle of July for Summer I and/or Summer II.
  • Due to new federal regulations tied to receipt of the federal Pell Grant, your Spring 2011 Pell Grant reflects your anticipated credit hour acceleration towards your degree.  If you do not complete and enroll in 25 or more credit hours between the three terms ( Summer 2010, Fall 2010, and Spring 2011), your Spring 2011 Pell Grant will be reduced.

ACADEMIC COMPETITIVENESS GRANT (ACG)

  • Must meet ACG eligibility requirements.
  • Must be enrolled for a minimum of 6 credit hours with enrollment in Summer II.
  • Receipt of ACG in summer will decrease the amount available during the subsequent Fall/Spring semesters.
  • Only used as credit toward your bill if it is an authorized amount.
  • ACG will not be paid and potentially refunded until the middle of July for Summer I and Summer II.
  • Award amount will be based on enrollment status.

NATIONAL SCIENCE AND MATH ACESS TO RETAIN TALENT GRANT (SMART)

  • Must meet SMART eligibility requirements.
  • Must be enrolled for a minimum of 6 credit hours with enrollment in Summer II.
  • Receipt of SMART in summer will decrease the amount available during the subsequent Fall/Spring semesters.
  • Only used as credit toward your bill if it is an authorized amount.
  • SMART will not be paid and potentially refunded until the middle of July for Summer I and Summer II.
  • Award amount will be based on enrollment status.
  • Must take at least one course specific to and required for the SMART eligible major during Summer I and/or Summer II.

FEDERAL TEACH GRANT

  • Must meet TEACH eligibility requirements, including academic certification.  Please visit http://www.fredonia.edu/finaid/forms/TEACHGrant.pdf for more information.
  • TEACH Entrance Counseling and the Agreement To Serve (ATS) must be completed in order for TEACH to be used as credit toward your bill.
  • TEACH will not be paid and potentially refunded until the middle of July for Summer I and/or Summer II.

FEDERAL STAFFORD LOAN (SUBSIDIZED AND UNSUBSIDIZED)

  • Must be enrolled for a minimum of 6 credit hours during Summer I and/or Summer II.
  • You will be required to complete a new Federal Direct online Master Promissory Note (eMPN) for your Stafford Loan at  http://www.fredonia.edu/finaid/stafford.asp.  ALL STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE THIS NEW eMPN!
  • Receipt of a Stafford Loan in summer will decrease the amount available during the subsequent Fall/Spring semesters.  Federal Regulations allow an annual 12 month maximum loan limit depending on your year in college. 
  • Used as credit toward your bill when the loan has been guaranteed.

FEDERAL PLUS LOAN

  • Must be enrolled a minimum of 6 credit hours during Summer I and Summer II.
  • Complete the online PLUS application process by accessing http://www.fredonia.edu/finaid/plus.asp and clicking on "Apply Online for PLUS."
  • Used as a credit toward your bill when the loan has been guaranteed

PRIVATE ALTERNATIVE LOANS

  • Alternative Financing Options are available online at http://www.fredonia.edu/finaid/alt.asp.
  • Notification of approval or denial will be sent to you by your lender.  It is imperative that you complete and return all necessary documents sent to you by the lender.
  • Used as a credit toward your bill when the loan has been certified by the Financial Aid Office and subsequently approved/guaranteed by your lender.
  • Due to new Federal legislation tied to additional private loan disclosure notices and self-certification requirements, please note that processing time will be  lengthened considerably with your lender.  Be sure to apply early!  

* Students taking less than 6 credit hours in Summer I may only use an approved Alternative Loan, TEACH, or PELL for deferral.  All others must pay at the time of registration.  If Summer II registration allows the student to be eligible for Stafford Loans, they may be eligible to defer the Summer II payment.
