Join the School of Music for a unique and exciting five-day summer academy with leading international marimba virtuoso Keiko Abe. At Fredonia, the Keiko Abe Marimba Academy will provide an in-depth experience in performance, exploration of repertoire and interpretation, and the study of marimba history and evolution as the marimba and related instruments touched cultures around the world.

The academy will honor the contributions of Abe who successfully guided the development and manufacture of the first five-octave marimbas and who continually brings marimba music around the world to audiences of standing ovation. Academy participants will gain specific insights into Abe's unique compositions for the solo marimba and ensemble repertoire, as well as a broad perspective about the marimba that includes practical information concerning technique and performance.

Keiko Abe will appear in concert as a solo artist. Selected academy registrants will have a chance to perform for her in daily master classes, and the most advanced participants will be invited to perform with her on the culminating concert. (See details below.) All levels of interested marimba players are invited and encouraged to attend the Keiko Abe Marimba Academy.

Guest clinicians include: performer, historian, and Abe biographer Rebecca Kite; Larry Dubill, a Japan Foundation Uchida Fellow who studied marimba with Keiko Abe in Japan; Dagara gyil specialist Matthew Aubeuf; and Fredonia faculty Kay Stonefelt and Tiffany Nicely.

All levels of interested marimbists are invited and encouraged to attend the Keiko Abe Academy. Please see application and reservation deadlines below.
