About the Area:
The large Voice Area of The State University of New York at Fredonia School of Music affords its students a wide array of performance and scholarly activities. With a voice and choral faculty of nationally and internationally recognized artists and teachers, students are introduced to all aspects of vocal music study in a highly personalized and supportive environment. In addition to traditional voice studio training, we offer numerous courses in Vocal Literature and History, and a highly respected Vocal Pedagogy curriculum, rare in an undergraduate setting.
A unique collaboration with the Fredonia Department of Theatre and Dance offers the foundation for annual fully staged opera and musical theatre productions, as well as offering a diverse range of study outside the “core” of music training, including courses in acting and dance. Our campus’ excellent foreign language program provides in-depth study of all major modern languages. The annual Hillman Opera boasts and almost 60 year tradition and provides one of the only full opera opportunities for undergraduate singers in the country. The annual musical production is a highlight of each academic year, and the professional caliber of both productions attracts a large and enthusiastic audience from surrounding cities. The select College Choir and Women’s Choir perform both on campus and in collaboration with professional orchestras in our region, and the Masterworks Chorus presents the great oratorio works in the literature as part of our annual scholarship benefit performance.
Fredonia is proud of its very active Student Government Association. Groups such as Student Opera Theatre Association, American Choral Directors Association, and Vocal Jazz provide substantial funding for performances and clinicians in their respective genres, and offer an important opportunity for students to serve as student elected officers where they hone the skills necessary to produce quality concerts, operas, and musicals, and intersect with world-renowned artists in a real-life business/management setting.
