Visiting pundits look at "What Happened" in '08 election
Monday, November 17, 2008

There’s little doubt that the 2008 elections signaled some major changes in the American national fabric; the challenge is trying to figure out just what that means.  The Communication Department will host a three of Western New York’s pre-eminent political observers Tuesday night (7:30, 101W Thompson Hall) for a forum examining just that.

Participating in the project will be:

  • Bob McCarthy, political reporter, Buffalo News. McCarthy has been a reporter for over 30 years, covering politics for most of that time. McCarthy writes a political column for The News’ Sunday editions.
  • Alan Bedenko, blogger. Bedenko may be best known to many as BuffaloPundit, but he is also an attorney and has been a candidate for political office. He’s vice president of Convergence Media, LLC, parent company of the major aggregator of blogs regarding life and politics in the region.
  • Chuck Cornell, interim director of SUNY Fredonia's Center for Rural Regional Development and Governance. Cornell is also director of the American Democracy Project at Fredonia, as well as a Chautauqua County legislator. He was also a congressional press secretary, serving in both congressional and senate offices.
  • Congressman Brian Higgins originally committed to attend the forum, but was forced to cancel to return to Washington.

Tuesday’s presentation is being coordinated by Elmer Ploetz, assistant professor of journalism at SUNY Fredonia. For further information, he can be contacted at
