Alumni and staff to speak at PRSSA panel discussion
Friday, November 13, 2009

A Public Relations major leads a press conference during the Department of Communication's annual Public Relations capstone class, in which students develop real-world plans for area not-for-profit organizations.

SUNY Fredonia’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) will hold a panel discussion on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. in room S104 of the Williams Center.

The panel will answer questions and provide guidance for students interested in the field Public Relations and/or Communications. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions regarding career experiences, job searching or general information regarding the field.

“It will provide students with the opportunity to meet and listen to real professionals in the workforce,” said Kaeleigh Champlain, PRSSA’s president and a senior Public Relations major.  “Students can get a firsthand look at what they can do with their degrees from people who were once in their shoes.”

The panelists will consist of alumni Jackie Bryant, ’09, Jeff Bucki, ’98, Kim Luangpakdy, ’98, Rich Ryan, ’04, and Mike Barone, SUNY Fredonia’s director of Public Relations. Bryant is a foundation associate at Niagara County Community College in Sanborn, N.Y.  Bucki is an account manager at Travers Collins & Co., marketing communications agency in Buffalo. Luangpakdy currently works for Aids Community Services, also in Buffalo.  Lastly, Ryan is an associate director of Development at SUNY Fredonia.

“I feel that it is beneficial for students to hear directly from current public relations professionals,” said Ana Ciarlo, treasurer of PRSSA and senior Public Relations major.  “There is only so much you can learn in a classroom and this is a way for students to experience how their major can be applied in the real world.”

The discussion will begin at 6 p.m. and will be held in S104 in the Williams Center on campus. For more information, contact Ana Ciarlo at (716) 912-3564 or
