Jonathan H. Woolson of Fredonia, N.Y., has been named assistant director for website communications at SUNY Fredonia. He has been a professional in the marketing, graphics and publishing industry for 12 years, and since 2004 has served local and national clients through his Fredonia, N.Y., company, “thinkplaydesign.” 

At SUNY Fredonia, he is responsible for the design, development, and execution of the university’s website, paying particular attention to sub-sites that serve prospective students, parents, visitors, and alumni.

Locally, he has created websites for the Fredonia Opera House and the Village of Fredonia, among others. His national clients include the publishers and authors of the books, QuarkXPress 6 for Dummies; QuarkXPress to InDesign: Face to Face; The Macintosh iLife, and Sell it on eBay.

A native of Fredonia, Mr. Woolson returned to the area two years ago after working for more than a decade in Colorado and California.

From 2000 to 2004, he was the senior multimedia designer for the global leader in the computer data storage industry, StorageTek, a company that was bought last year by Sun Microsystems. There, Mr. Woolson designed and developed intranet websites, and created and branded interactive marketing materials for DVDs and CD-ROMs.

Prior to StorageTek, Mr. Woolson was associate designer at Macworld, a monthly magazine dedicated to Apple Macintosh products that is published in print and online from its U.S. headquarters in San Francisco.

Mr. Woolson was employed from 1994 to 1997 by Quark, Inc., a software company known for its flagship desktop publishing product, QuarkXPress.

He contributed to the book, QuarkXPress 6 for Dummies, and has written articles for Macworld and Adobe’s Layers Magazine. He writes the regular column, “Online Culture,” for 716 magazine.

A graduate of Fredonia High School and former graphic artist of the Jamestown Post-Journal, Mr. Woolson earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from the School of Art and Design at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1991. He is currently a member of the Village of Fredonia Cable Board and the Festivals Fredonia board.

He and his wife, Laura Mitchell-Woolson, live in Fredonia with their two children, Allegra and Francesca.
