Friday, November 17, 2006

College of Education graduate students Cady Nenno, left, and Rebecca McNamara presented a workshop on visual literacy at the New York State Reading Association conference this month.

Graduate students Cady Nenno (Bolivar, NY) and Rebecca McNamara (Lockport, NY) presented at the New York State Reading Association (NYSRA) Conference on Nov. 9, 2006, in Saratoga Springs, NY.  Both are working on their master's degrees in literacy education.

Addressing the Conference theme of Endless Possibilities Through Reading and Writing, Nenno and McNamara conducted a workshop entitled “Reading the Pictures: Visual Literacy as Critical Literacy.” They developed the workshop based on the theories of visual and critical literacy they had explored during their literacy foundations courses.

Over a dozen New York State high school teachers and college-level teacher educators attended the workshop.

Ms. Nenno and Ms. McNamara skillfully guided teachers in the audience through a series of exercises and reflections designed to increase their knowledge of visual literacy.
