The Slush Rush Team at the International Education Center presented a check of $2,600 to David Tiffany of University Advancement for the Xylia Peterson ’85 Memorial Fund this week.

The impressive sum was raised from the 2-mile fun run that was held in early March. The proceeds provide scholarship assistance to junior or senior level international students who need financial assistance to complete his/her degree.

“A race like this take hundreds of hours to plan and this year’s race team did an excellent job raising the bar set last year,” said Marry Sasso, director of International Education. “I was so pleased to see all the international students who came to volunteer time and honor Xylia’s memory.”

The race was held in remembrance of Xylia Peterson, ’85, an international student at SUNY Fredonia who went on to become an important, contributing member of the community before she died tragically in an automobile accident at the age of 45.

"I'm so pleased with how the Slush Rush went this year. We're already thinking about how to improve the Slush Rush for 2011 and ways we can further involve the greater Fredonia/Dunkirk community,” said Mary Hills, assistant director of International Education and Slush Rush race coordinator. “The Slush Rush is a great fundraiser that helps us provide wonderful services to international students on our campus and a fantastic way to promote a healthy lifestyle in our campus community."

The Slush Rush is set to return March 6, 2011, and will continue to be a Fredonia tradition the first Sunday of every March.
