The 20th annual Fredonia Summer Music Festival, an educational experience for  instrumental students currently enrolled in grades 9 through 12, will be held from Sunday, June 27 through Saturday, July 3.

Set on the beautiful campus of SUNY Fredonia and housed in the university’s School of Music, the Fredonia Summer Music Festival takes advantage of the campus’ first-rate facilities and world-class teachers. Many of the festival faculty are also professors at the university. Outstanding performers and teachers provide unique opportunities for learning, improving technical skills and expanding musicality.

In addition to band rehearsals, chamber ensembles and jazz groups, students will attend daily musicianship classes (music theory, conducting, jazz improvisation, and/or music technology), participate in master classes, attend special evening recitals, and have time for individual practice and recreation. The Fredonia Faculty Brass, Woodwind and Percussion ensembles will be featured during evening recitals.

The Wind Symphony will be directed by Dr. Martin Seggelke, conductor of the University of Minnesota-Morris Wind Ensembles and Professor of Conducting and Clarinet. Prior to his appointment at UMM, he taught conducting at the Eastman School of Music and served as Assistant to the Director of the Eastman Wind Ensemble and Eastman Wind Orchestra. Seggelke holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Music in Conducting at SUNY Fredonia.

The Jazz Band will again be directed by Bruce Johnstone, Director of Jazz Studies at SUNY Fredonia. Johnstone, a well-known saxophonist, has performed with Maynard Ferguson, Dexter Gordon, The Woody Herman Band and many others.

Members of the School of Music faculty and special guests will round out the teaching roster including: Dr. Susan Royal, flute; Dr. Sarah Hamilton, oboe; Mr. Amrom Chodos, clarinet; Ms. Laura Koepke, bassoon; Dr. Marc Guy, horn; Ms. Diane Hunger, saxophone; Mr. Marc Lentsch, trumpet; Mr. Barry Kilpatrick, trombone, Mr. Raymond Stewart, euphonium/tuba; and Mr. John Bacon, percussion.

Registration for the Fredonia Summer Band Camp is only $680, which includes housing, meals, and a camp t-shirt. Commuters pay $360 (meals not included) or $525 (meals included).
