Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Welch’s/National Scholarships have been awarded to two sisters attending SUNY Fredonia. Sophomore Halee and Senior Kazlin Mason of Westfield, N.Y. each received $1,100 awards for the 2010-11 academic year.

Welch’s and the National Grape Cooperative endowed the scholarship with the Fredonia College Foundation for students at SUNY Fredonia with academic merit and who are the children or grandchildren of their employees or grower-owners.

At SUNY Fredonia, Kazlin is majoring in communication disorders and sciences and carrying a minor in music. Her overall college grade point average (GPA) is a 3.86, but within her major she has a 4.0. She will graduate in 2011.

Halee is majoring in biology and carrying a minor in public health. Her overall college GPA is a 3.6. She will graduate from SUNY Fredonia in 2013.

Kazlin and Halee, daughters of James and Kimberly Mason, are granddaughters of Louis and Anne Barresi. Mr. Barresi has been a supervisor at Welch’s for over 30 years.

Kazlin and Halee were both home-educated through the Santa Fe Community School, a state-recognized, regionally and nationally-accredited private school. They both graduated with honors and both accrued college credits while being dually enrolled at Jamestown Community College during high school.

Welch's is the world's leading producer of juices, jams and jellies made from Concord and Niagara grapes grown only in the U.S. and Ontario, Canada. The National Grape Cooperative consists of more than 1,100 patrons who supply Welch’s with its principal raw products – Concord and Niagara grapes – from more than 45,000 acres of vineyards in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Washington, and Ontario, Canada.
