Master class with Yo-Yo Ma to be held Dec. 7 in King
Monday, November 28, 2011

The School of Music is excited to host cellist Yo-Yo Ma in a master class prior to his concert next Thursday, Dec. 8 (sold out). The master class will be given Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. in King Concert Hall.

Tickets are free, but required. Contact the SUNY Fredonia Ticket Office (716-673-3501, located in the Temporary Office Complex next to the Williams Center in the Dods Hall parking lot). Tickets must be picked up in advance at the Ticket Office and in person. Fredonia students must present their IDs to be eligible. One ticket per person only.

The master class will consist of performances by Fredonia students, including a group performance by the cello students, a solo perfomance, and a chamber music ensemble. Yo-Yo Ma will provide comment and illustration, focusing on refining the details of the performances as well as sharing his techniques for making profound artistic connection with an audience.

Yo-Yo Ma has been a cultural beacon for decades. Young and old flock to his sold-out concerts, coming away moved, thrilled, and inspired. This unparalleled artist has performed at the Oscars, the Grammys, the Olympics, and before a live audience of over a million at the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

On Thursday, Dec. 8, he will take the stage in King Concert Hall to perform Dvorák’s beloved Cello Concerto with the Fredonia College Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. David Rudge. Additional programming will include Strauss’ Overture to Die Fledermaus and Elgar's Enigma Variations.

This event is partially sponsored by the Williams Visiting Scholar/Artist program.
