Janelle Gabriel's next step is Ohio State University

Janelle Gabriel, of Avon Lake, Ohio, has been accepted into the Ph.D. program of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology with a university fellowship at Ohio State University. Upon graduation, Gabriel plans to pursue a doctoral degree in Fall 2012 with a special interest in cancer.

Gabriel is majoring in Molecular Genetics with a Chemistry minor at SUNY Fredonia. During her four years at  the university, she has conducted research studies in genetics and molecular biology on- and off-campus. Since 2010, Gabriel has been a student researcher in Dr. Scott Ferguson's lab in the SUNY Fredonia Department of Biology. In Summer 2011, she was selected as one of 39 students, out of 600 applicants, to be summer scholars in a research program in genetics at the Grayhack and Phizicky labs of the University of Rochester.

Gabriel was also selected to be a part of 2010 NSF Undergraduate Summer Research Experience at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Working in a group of 25 students, she researched and examined the medicinal manner of encapsulated Nitric oxide synthase, an enzyme. Due to her efforts in research, Gabriel will graduate with biology departmental honors.
