Ziya Arnavut chaired conference in Istanbul

Dr. Ziya Arnavut, professor of computer and information sciences at SUNY Fredonia, chaired the Ninth High-Capacity Networks and Emerging/Enabling Technologies conference, held Dec. 12-14 in Istanbul, Turkey, in cooperation with the Kadir Has University.

The conference was technically sponsored by the Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the world’s largest professional association for advancement of technology.

More than 110 papers were submitted to the conference from several different countries, of which 50 were accepted for publication and will appear in the IEEE Xplore digital library. Basar Koc, a former SUNY Fredonia student currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Miami’s computer science department in Coral Gables, co-authored a paper with Dr. Arnavut.

In addition, Dr. Junaid Zubairi, a fellow professor of computer and information sciences at SUNY Fredonia, gave a presentation of a joint paper with Ahenk Er, a 2011 SUNY Fredonia graduate. Dr. Zubairi served as publication chair of the conference as well.

The conference included five invited speakers on optical networks and several emerging technology topics: Dr. Robert Splinter (Valencell Inc., USA), Yong Tak Lee (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, South Korea), Aba Ebong (University of North Carolina, USA), Dr. Manshad Satti (IT-Butler E-services, United Arab Emirates), and Kamal Alamesh (Edith Cowan University, Australia).

Dr. Arnavut is a native of Cyprus residing in the U.S. since 1984. He is currently in his 16th year as a faculty member of the Computer and Information Sciences Department at SUNY Fredonia. He is also President of the United University Professions Fredonia Chapter. Next year, he will chair the HONET 2013 conference in Cyprus.
