Relay for Life teams raise more than $30K
Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Over the weekend, SUNY Fredonia’s Relay for Life event raised over $30,000 for the American Cancer Society at the 12-hour walk-a-thon event held in Steele Hall on Saturday on the SUNY Fredonia campus.

At the event, over 500 participants and 40 teams walked around the indoor track enjoying performances from students and singing groups, John Higgins, the Riveters, Some Like It Hot, Liam Jones, and Harrison Scenkel. Also at the event, each team conducted its own side fundraiser such as Fish Pong, sand art, bake sales and many more.

This year’s Relay for Life Honorary Survivor was Loretta Dean, the SUNY Fredonia FSA Café supervisor who is currently battling breast cancer.

“At the end of the night, out representative from American Cancer Society told us we were over $30,000 and that number continues to climb,” SUNY Fredonia’s American Cancer Society Club’s President Jaclyn Faliero commented. “The event went really well.”

To conclude the night, a Chinese Lantern Ceremony took place outside Steele Hall releasing messages into the air creating a heartwarming vision of lights in the night sky.

The opportunity to donate for this year’s Relay for Life event to the American Cancer Society is still available online until August for anyone interested, by visiting www.relayforlife.org/sunyfredonia.
