Christmas tale opens Kaleidoscope Family Series Dec. 6

Child’s Play Touring Theatre captures the spirit of the holiday season with its production of “The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t,” which opens the Kaleidoscope Family Series on Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. in Marvel Theatre at SUNY Fredonia.

The spirit of Christmas will take center stage at SUNY Fredonia’s Rockefeller Arts Center when the Kaleidoscope Family Series presents “The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t” on Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. in Marvel Theatre.  This production by Child’s Play Touring Theatre of Chicago offers a peek at the hustle and bustle and near disasters of the Christmas season faced by Santa and his helpers.

Catch these close-call Christmas catastrophes in a series of three short stories written by children and brought to life by the actors of Child’s Play Touring Theatre.  “The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t” includes “Dinky the Dancing Reindeer,” “How Santa Got Well” and “Santa and the Witch.”

Founded in 1978, Child’s Play Touring Theatre was the first theatre company to realize the value of children’s own writing and perform exclusively stories and poems written by young authors.  Combining the important, imaginative writings of children with the craftsmanship of professional theatre artists and educators, the company created a unique stage where children’s voices can be heard, examined and treasured.

A nationally recognized not-for-profit organization, Child’s Play inspires young people to read, write and think creatively.  The goal at Child’s Play is to help children understand the value and significance that writing and reading has in their lives. Their performances and workshops offer a powerful teaching tool that strengthens and enhances the teaching and learning process.

The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t is approximately one hour in length and is recommended for ages 6 and up.

The Kaleidoscope Family Series is sponsored by The Observer as part of the Lake Shore Savings Season. The event sponsor is Star Media Group.  Tickets are available through the SUNY Fredonia Ticket Office in the Williams Center, by phone at 673-3501 or online at
