Samantha Jemiolo of Orchard Park, N.Y., has been named Student of the Month for November by the Office of Residence Life. She was nominated for the award by Mark Suida, assistant director of Campus Life and coordinator of the Leadership Studies minor, because of her “positive attitude and competence.”

Samantha, a Psychology major with a minor in Sociology, has a list of various activities on and off campus. She is president of the Fredonia chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society, and a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Psi Chi. Mark noted, “Samantha is extremely intelligent and has a great work ethic.” She has participated in numerous campus activities within her major; most recently she completed a study on the effects of parent-child shared reading programs on underprivileged families and presented her findings at the Western Pennsylvania Undergraduate Psychological Conference. Samantha is also a member of Operation Smile, the Young Life Leaders and is a psychology tutor in the Learning Center.

When not involved on campus, Samantha is a nurse’s volunteer assistant at the Jericho Road Medical Practice. She has also been to Honduras and Costa Rica on medical mission trips, working in patient care clinics and in the pharmacy. She is also a staff volunteer at the Everywoman Opportunity Center, a summer staff member at Young Life camp and a tutor at a Dunkirk elementary school, working with fourth graders.

When asked her favorite thing about Fredonia, Samantha wrote, “My favorite thing about Fredonia is the campus community. The people I have met at Fredonia have become like family to me.” She also added, “Fredonia offers a truly collegiate experience, professors are always offering tremendous support; socially, academically and personally.”

Samantha will graduate in the spring and has applied to an Accelerated Post Graduate Bachelor’s in Nursing program. Her goal is to become a Registered Nurse within a year and a half with plans to pursue her Nurse Practitioners degree to work with underprivileged populations.

The Student of the Month program was implemented in 2003 to recognize students who are well-rounded, excel in their academics and contribute positively to the campus and community. To nominate a student, visit:
