Thursday, February 06, 2014

SUNY Fredonia is currently accepting applications for the Japan Studies Institute to be held in San Diego, Calif., June 9 to 22. The university will fund (seminar fee and airfare) one application based on the recommendation of the selection committee.

The application should consist of a one to two-page narrative describing why a faculty member wishes to attend and what benefits it will bring to the faculty member in terms of future teaching and scholarship. A cover sheet should indicate the applicant’s full name, department, campus address, phone number and email contact information. All applicants should demonstrate how the experience will benefit themselves, their students, and SUNY Fredonia. The committee will accept the local application narratives until Friday, Feb. 21. Applicants will be notified by within a week.

The program is sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and provides faculty members from many different disciplines a living-learning program about a critically important country in Asia. The program is designed for faculty with little or no knowledge of Japan. The two week residential program is held on the San Diego State University campus. All other costs, including transportation, two weeks of housing, institute costs, and a $500 stipend for food, are provided by a scholarship through the Nippon Foundation.

Applications should be sent (email or regular mail) to Ted Schwalbe, Department of Communication, 311 McEwen Hall (Schwalbe@fredonia.edu). More information about the program can be found at http://www.aascu.org/programs/JSI/. Interested person s should contact Dr. Schwalbe with questions.
