Mock trial on April 1 calls for jury audience
Friday, March 28, 2014

The Fredonia Mock Trial Team will perform a case on Tuesday, April 1, at 7 p.m. in Williams Center Room S204ABC.

The demonstration is intended to provide insight on mock trial. The team will present a case using attorneys and witnesses to decide the fate of the defendant, Whit Bowman, who allegedly committed a robbery at an amusement park and injured an officer.

Team members will also briefly discuss the kind of work and time commitments that mock trial requires. Registration slips for the Fall 2014 course will be available.

Founded in 1985 by Dean Richard Calkins of Drake Law School, the American Mock Trial Association sponsors a yearly national mock trial tournament for undergraduates from the nation’s colleges and universities. This year, over 650 teams from more than 400 universities participated in regional tournaments.

Fredonia began its participation in 1999 and was the first comprehensive university in SUNY to participate. In November 2013, the team competed in a warm-up tournament held at St. Bonaventure University, at which they earned the American Mock Trial Spirit Award as the team who best exemplified civility, justice, and fair play. At the Great Lakes Regional Competition, held Feb. 8 to 9 at SUNY Buffalo State, the team finished 10th of 25 teams, the highest finish in Fredonia history.

The Fredonia Mock Trial team is asking that the campus and community come participate as a pretend jury and audience in the matter State of Midlands vs. Bowman.
