Members of the Fredonia State and SUNY Cortland softball teams following their Strikeout Cancer doubleheader Saturday at Blue Devil Field.

Fredonia State built an early lead and hung on late for a 7-3 SUNYAC softball win Saturday over the Cortland Red Dragons at Blue Devil Field. The Red Dragons bounced back for a 13-1 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Blue Devils ended the day at 8-13 overall and 5-7 in the conference. Cortland is 19-13 overall, 10-4 in the conference.

In addition to being Senior Day, Saturday was also billed as Strikeout Cancer Day and both teams wore commemorative t-shirts. The Blue Devils wore pink shirts with royal blue numbering and lettering, and the Red Dragons gray shirts with pink numbering and lettering. Both teams wore pink socks. Proceeds from the event, including a silent auction, benefitted the Alex Hollander Education Fund. He is the son of former Buffalo State head coach Sandra Hollander, who lost a six-year battle with cancer in 2012.

Making the Game 1 start on Senior Day, the Blue Devils' lone graduating player, Alyssa Brognano (New Paltz, N.Y.), pitched four scoreless innings before yielding two runs in the fifth inning. She was charged with a third run in the sixth inning before Kelsey Gannett (jr.; Endwell, N.Y.) closed out the win with two scoreless innings of relief.

The Blue Devils broke on top with three runs in the first inning on a Cortland error, a single by Kim Lotocki (soph.; Hamburg, N.Y.), and consecutive two-out doubles by Jess Lauck (jr.; Buffalo, N.Y.) and Erin Mushtare (fr.; Oneonta, N.Y.). Mushtare's double drove in two runs.

Mushtare opened the fourth inning with a single. After stealing second, she scored on a single by Madeline Medina (soph.; Hamburg, N.Y.). That was followed by an RBI single by Kate Nicholson (jr.; Heuvelton, N.Y.), an RBI single by Lotocki, a single by Cherise Gunnell (jr.; Falconer, N.Y.), and another Cortland error.

RBIs by Erin Wolstenholme and Courtney Kadish accounted for two Cortland runs in the fifth inning. Alicia Hibbard drove in the third Cortland run in the sixth.

Game 2 began as a pitcher's duel between Gannett for Fredonia State and Sarah Salamone for Cortland. Her teammates staked Salamone to a 1-0 lead with a run in the third, then used the long ball to pull away. Bianca Trio smashed a three-run homer in the fifth. Diane Cork and Devynn Wilder hit two-run homers during the an eight-run seventh.

Salamone pitched a complete-game two-hitter for the win. Gannett fell to 6-6 with the loss.
