Devils volleyball finishes 3-0 in Pool Play

The Fredonia women's volleyball team gathered two more conference wins Saturday by dropping Plattsburgh and Brockport in SUNYAC Pool Play. The Blue Devils improved to 3-0.

Against Plattsburgh, the Devils won in four sets (25-22, 23-25, 25-13, 25-21). The team found offensive production primarily from the outside, with Sara Madison (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) collecting 15 kills and Kristen Stanek (Hamburg, N.Y./Orchard Park) finishing with 10. Kelly Edinger (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) finished the four-set match with 48 assists.

A thrilling five-set victory followed over Brockport (11-25, 25-16, 25-15, 19-25, 15-8). Madison was again a key component in the offense with 16 kills, including four timely kills in the fifth set.

"After a really good first day yesterday," Blue Devil head coach Geoff Braun said, "we had a lot of ups and downs today, but we scrapped and managed to come out with a 3-0 (Pool Play) record. We learned a lot and the experience we gained this weekend should help us moving forward."

Other top performers from the match came from the team's defense. Lauren Hokaj (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary's) collected 23 digs, while Jane Garrity (Victor, N.Y./Victor) was in on seven blocks.

The wins improve the Blue Devils' overall record to 11-6. The team will play at home in Dods Hall next weekend at the Blue Devil Invitational. The team's first match is on Friday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. against Pitt.-Bradford.
