Marion Art Gallery to host exhibition by printmaker Poskovic
Monday, October 06, 2014

The works of a Michigan-based print artist will be featured in the Cathy and Jesse Marion Art Gallery beginning Friday, Oct. 17.

"We Were All – Endi Poskovic: Printworks,” will open with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 17 in the gallery, which is located on the main level of Rockefeller Arts Center.

The exhibition features Poskovic’s black and white and color woodblock prints which “hint at the dichotomies that exist in life and encourage the viewer to explore universal themes of cultural displacement, fragmented memory, transformation and revival.”

Poskovic was born in Sarajevo and educated in Europe and the United States. He is a professor at the University of Michigan and has received numerous prestigious fellowships, including the John Simon Guggenheim Award. His work is in many public collections including those at the Harvard University Fogg Art Museum and the Royal Antwerp Museum of Fine Arts.

By combining visual representation with text in his works, Poskovic attempts to shift the reading of the images by providing a new context for the viewer to continually reinterpret.

“Endi Poskovic’s large ‘enigmatically political’ prints are as conceptually and visually powerful as they are technically accomplished,” said Barbara Räcker, director the Marion Art Gallery. “We are fortunate to host such a renowned printmaker, which would not have been possible without the assistance of many people.”

Räcker credited Tina Hastings, former director of Marion Art Gallery, for her collaboration with the Fredonia College Foundation, Department of Visual Arts and New Media, Art Forum, International Education Center and the Department of History to organize the exhibition and related events.

“In addition to the exhibition, Endi will be interacting with our students and the general public during numerous programs through the week of October 13, including receptions, gallery tours and a lecture and workshop,” Räcker said.

A Visiting Artist program lecture will be held on Thursday, Oct. 16 from 8:30 to 10 p.m. in McEwen Hall Room 209, while a printmaking workshop will be held on Saturday, Oct.18, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Rockefeller Arts Center Room 231.

In addition, gallery talk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the gallery.

All programs are free and open to the public. The printmaking workshop is limited to the first 20 people who register. To register, contact Räcker by email at

“We Were All – Endi Poskovic: Printworks” runs though Nov. 19.

Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. from Tuesday through Thursday, noon to 6 p.m. Friday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Funding for the exhibition and the related programs is provided by the Fredonia College Foundation’s Williams Visiting Professorship Endowment, Carnahan-Jackson Humanities Fund, Cathy and Jesse Marion Endowment Fund, Carl J. Nordell Art Gallery Endowment; Friends of Rockefeller Arts Center; the Department of Visual Arts and New Media; Art Forum; International Education Center and the Department of History.
