Nearly 300 SUNY Fredonia students participated in the university’s Applied Communication Association’s Third Fall Sweep.

Volunteers in the community raked lawns on Central Avenue, Temple Street, Maple Street and smaller side streets in the village of Fredonia on Sunday, Nov. 4. Following the event a social gathering was held in the Dods Hall gymnasium which included Fredonia officials, President Dennis Hefner, Fredonia Mayor Michael Sullivan and Vice President for Student Affairs David Herman. Attending were community members, faculty, staff, and many students. The campus a capella group Much More Chill performed during the gathering.

“We had almost 300 students participate in today’s (Sunday’s) event, which surpassed our greatest expectations. Our main goal was to make students more aware of the community and the community members and because of the turnout, I think we met this goal,” said Kara Welch, Fall Sweep co-chair.

The event was co-sponsored by the Student Association, the Golden Key International Honour Society, the Department of Athletics, and the Public Relations Student Society of America.

The Fredonia Fall Sweep was established in 2005 by the Advanced Leadership Development Program class and the Applied Communication Association as a way for Fredonia students to give back to the community in which they spend their college years.
