Women's basketball avenges early-season loss

The Fredonia women's basketball team used a double-double from sophomore Jamie Curry (Ransomville, N.Y. / Wilson) to down the Medaille Mavericks, 60-57, on Saturday.

Curry accounted for 11 points and 11 rebounds. She was supported by freshman Jacque Law (Machias, N.Y. / Pioneer) with 14 points off the bench, and 10 points from junior Sabrina Macaulay (Newark, N.Y. / Newark). Law and Macaulay combined to go 11 for 11 from the free-throw lines. As a team, the Devils converted 16 of 18 attempts.

The Devils went into the break with a 35-30 lead. Medaille led by as many as six points in the early going before the Devils tied the game at 12-all on a layup by Halloran midway through the first half. Fredonia's biggest lead of the half, eight points, came at the 4:45 mark following a jumper by Kaylyn Billups (Buffalo, N.Y. / CSAT) to make it 27-19.

The Devils would lead by as many as 10 points in the second half. Late in the contest, however, the hosts would make it a one-point game. With Fredonia up 58-51 with 2:25 to play, the Mavericks scored three straight baskets to make it 58-57 with 23 seconds remaining.

Curry would cap the scoring with a pair of free throws with 20 second remaining. Following a timeout, Medaille was able to get off a pair of shots, but could not connect.

Fredonia held a slight advantage in rebounds, 37-34. Medaille had a slim edge in shooting, 36.7 percent (22 of 60) to Fredonia's 35.6 percent (21 of 59).

The Devils move to 3-5 on the season, avenging a 76-69 loss to Medaille back on Nov. 25th. The Mavericks fall to 3-6.

The Devils play host to Geneseo on Jan. 6. Tip-off following the men's game is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Steele Hall.
