Essay by Vanwesenbeeck on Tomasula published in new book
Thursday, April 23, 2015

Associate Professor Birger Vanwesenbeeck of the Department of English has had his essay featured in the scholarly volume, “Steve Tomasula: The Art and Science of New Media Fiction,” published by Bloomsbury.

The volume, edited by University of Western Illinois Professor David Banash, marks the first book-length study of multimedia novelist Steve Tomasula, and contains essays by several leading scholars of contemporary American literature including Katherine Hayles and Lance Olsen.

Dr. Vanwesenbeeck’s essay, “Mining the Gap: Word, Image, and Loss in The Book of Portraiture,” explores the strategic connections between mourning, lateness, and ekphrasis in Tomasula’s 2006 novel.

Vanwesenbeeck is scheduled to present a shorter version of the essay at the annual convention of the North East Modern Language Association in Toronto in May.
