Rivera and McVicker present at Buffalo Humanities Festival
Monday, October 26, 2015

Drs. Carmen Rivera of the Department of World Languages and Cultures and Jeanette McVicker of the Department of English presented a talk, "Gendering the Border," at the second annual Buffalo Humanities Festival held recently at SUNY Buffalo State.

McVicker and Rivera gave a multi-disciplinary presentation supporting the festival theme, "Gender Bender," by focusing on how discussions of the U.S.-Mexico border are negatively gendered in immigration policy, politics and news media coverage. The presentation featured work by contemporary artists and writers who provide alternative understandings of how gender politics impacts the border.

The 2015 Buffalo Humanities Festival aimed to answer the question: are we bound by gender? The event included presentations, performances, and conversations through history, art, literature and music.
