Several Musical Theatre majors from Fredonia fared well in a recent National Association of Teachers Singing (NATS) student competition. The students took first place in three out of four Musical Theatre categories at the event, which was held recently at Nazareth College in Rochester, N.Y,.

More than 200 students from schools including Ithaca, the Eastman School of Music and Potsdam competed.

“Our Musical Theatre majors did a great job at the annual NATS student competition,” Angela Haas, chair of the Voice area for the School of Music, said. “It was the biggest competition ever for our chapter.”

The Musical Theater competition is broken into two divisions - the Lower Division for freshmen and sophomores and the Upper Division for juniors and seniors.

In the Lower Division, Jeffrey Kringer placed first in the men’s competition and Michaela Tramuta placed third in the women’s competition.

In the Upper Division, Anna Chicco took first place, Christine Boehm took second and Stevie Jackson was third in the women’s competition.

In the men’s competition, Billy Blair took first place and Steven Saelzler was second.

NATS is an international organization founded in 1944. It is the largest professional association of teachers of singing in the world with more than 7,000 members in the United States, Canada and nearly 30 other countries.
