Morrison breaks mile record at Houghton

Laura Morrison ran a 5:02.91 mile on Friday at Houghton.

Coming off her first cross country season in which she broke Fredonia's record in the 6,000-meter run, Laura Morrison (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) has tacked her name next to the 1-mile run record as well.

Running at the Highlander Invitational, Morrison toppled a record that had stood since 1990 (Jennifer McNerney, 5:09.14). Her time of 5:02.91 was also the fastest mile time by a female in Houghton's Kerr-Pegula Fieldhouse, which opened in 2014.

Brittany Feldman (Jamestown/Southwestern) took third in two events: the 60-meter dash (8:16) and the high jump (1.55 meters). Sarah Couperus (Marion/Marion) finished fifth in the high jump (1.55 meters) and sixth in the triple jump (10.14 meters).

Mikayla Capestrani was tops among Fredonia's pole vaulters, clearing 3.30 meters and finishing fourth. Julia Schreier (Lockport, N.Y. / Starpoint) was fifth after clearing 3.15 meters.

Rachel Williams (Lockport/Lockport) took sixth in the 20 lb. weight throw with a throw of 11.96 meters.

Hannah Kurbs (Lockport/Lockport) and Bonnie Binggeli (Walworth/Gananda) also finished towards the top of the 60 runners competing in the mile. Kurbs took 13th (5:28.85), while Binggeli was 17th (5:33.93).

Fredonia posted the highest finish in the 4x400-meter relay as well, with Binggeli, Feldman, Morrison, and Samantha Ruszczyk (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) teaming up for a 4:11.82 finish.

The team will split next weekend, with members traveling to Boston University for the John Thomas Terrier Classic, and to Brockport for the Golden Eagle Multi and Invitational.
