Registration underway for Fredonia’s Playground Drama Camp for children

The red carpet will once again be rolled out for Playground Drama Camp, a fun introduction to theatre and cinematic arts for children, ages 7 to 18, hosted during August by the Department of Theatre and Dance at Fredonia.

Three week-long camps will provide rich opportunities for children, who become Playground Players, to explore their interests in the dramatic arts through “on camera” and musical theatre productions.

The first week (Aug. 1-6) for children ages 14-18, is devoted to FilmWorks at the Fredonia Technology Incubator at 214 Central Ave., Dunkirk. Footage will be shot on location in the area and edited in collaboration with Apple, Inc., at the Walden Galleria near Buffalo.

The second and third weeks will be devoted to preparing two full-fledged theatrical productions. During the second week (Aug. 8-13), children, ages 11-18, will apply talent and hard work to prepare for their presentation of Disney’s “Little Mermaid Jr.” The third week (Aug. 15-20), ages 7-12, will be dedicated to Disney’s “Aladdin Kids.” Musical theatre activities are held on campus at Rockefeller Arts Center.

Each player receives a free T-shirt, daily snack and Playground incentive awards at each camp.

Monday through Friday morning activities are followed by a lunch brought from home, while afternoon adventures include a rotation of classes, snacks, fresh air and fun activities. Pre-show drop-off at 8:30 a.m. and daily showcase from 4:45 to 5:15 p.m. provide flexible drop-off and pickup options.

Saturday sessions are devoted to final preparation for the main events. Tickets to FilmWorks’ Final Cut productions to be screened on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 11 a.m. at the incubator are complimentary. Tickets for “Little Mermaid Jr.” and “Aladdin Kids” to be performed on Saturday, Aug. 13 and 20, respectively, at 3:30 p.m. at Rockefeller Arts Center are $7 each.

Transportation from the campus to the incubator and Apple Store is provided.

The cost to enroll in each camp is $250, which includes a $100 non-refundable deposit, if paid by June 1. The enrollment cost rises to $275, including a $100 non-refundable deposit, if placed after June. 1. Checks can be made payable to: State University of New York at Fredonia IFR 900319.00.

The camp, directed by Fredonia Theatre and Dance Professor Ted Sharon, is produced in cooperation with the Rockefeller Arts Center and the Department of Theatre and Dance. To learn more or to obtain a registration form, contact Mr. Sharon at (716) 410-3597 or
