Caviedes guest co-editor of the Journal of Contemporary European Research

Dr. Alexander Caviedes

Alexander Caviedes, associate professor in the Department of Politics and International Affairs, recently served as guest co-editor of a special issue of the Journal of Contemporary European Research devoted to European Union governance, together with Willem Maas of York University, Toronto.

The issue, "Sixty-five years of European Governance" includes 12 articles that examine the way certain institutional roles and the governance of particular policy areas, including the European Monetary Union (the Euro), energy policy, and foreign affairs, has evolved since the creation of the original European Coal and Steel Community in 1951. Dr. Caviedes noted that European Union may be close to all-encompassing in its impact over European societies, but the articles point out the way that governance is shared between the European institutions housed in Brussels and individual member states. He adds that the research delineates how regional government and non-state actors are increasingly integrated into decision-making that often results in voluntary guidelines rather than binding law.

Aside from coordinating the editing of the contributions together with anonymous reviewers, Dr. Caviedes also co-authored the introductory chapter with Maas, and contributed a single-authored research article, "European Integration and the Governance of Migration."
