School of Music Children’s Concert Series continues in March

The Fredonia Woodwind Quintet

The School of Music continues its program of free concerts designed for children in March featuring the Fredonia Woodwind Quintet, a student ensemble, performing a half-hour Children's Concert with two performances, one at 10:30 a.m. and one at 11:30 am, on Saturday, March 5 in Dunkirk Free Library, 536 Central Ave.

The musicians are sophomores from the Fredonia School of Music including Sara Wright, flute; Caitlyn Derrick, oboe; Lauren Kirchner, clarinet; Brendan Gardner, bassoon, and Hanna Bena, horn.

The concerts are free to the public and are designed to introduce children, infants to 6 years old, to musical instruments. Performers will invite the children to sit on the floor close to the instruments and musicians. It is encouraged that family members bring a blanket or floor mat for the children to sit on. Stroller may be parked around the edge of the seating area for those with infants.

"It's wonderful to see the musical relationship between the children and the college student performers develop as the concert progresses. The musicians are sharing music they love, and the children certainly respond to that," said Sarah Hamilton, associate professor of oboe and co-organizer.

The concert series is part of the Musical Journeys Program, a community outreach project offered by the Fredonia School of Music. More information is available at www.fredonia.edu/music/community/ccs.asp or call (716) 673-4628.
