Mulcahy, Couperus win SUNYAC crowns

Collin Mulcahy crosses the finish line on Saturday at SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

An exhausted Collin Mulcahy (Batavia/Batavia) collapsed into his coach's arms on Saturday after winning a SUNYAC Championship in the one-mile run at Brockport.

On the second day of SUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, Mulcahy ran just footsteps behind Geneseo's Isaac Garcia-Cassani, whom he had never beaten before, until pulling ahead the final lap of the race. His time 4:08.76 puts him at No. 4 in NCAA Division III as of Saturday evening.

The men's team finished in sixth place with 80.5 points, while the women were fifth with 74.5 points.

On the women's side, Sarah Couperus (Marion, N.Y./Marion) won a SUNYAC title in the high jump with a personal best clearance of 1.63 meters. Brittany Feldman (Jamestown/Southwestern) took third in the same event (1.53 meters). Feldman also scored in the 400-meter dash, finishing third (58.78), and the 200-meter dash, finishing seventh (26.28).

Saturday's men's highlights:

The competitors in the men's weight throw dominated the podium on Saturday. Sawyer Bell (Middletown, N.Y./Roy C. Ketchum) took second (16.81 meters), Kyle Brown (Hamburg/Hamburg) third (16.48 meters), Hsin Chin (Pleasant View/Arlington) fourth (15.46 meters), and Kevin Geiser (Corning/Notre Dame) fifth (14.44 meters).

Nick Serafin (Depew/Depew) finished seventh and Rocky Caparro (Staten Island/Susan E. Wagner) eighth in the high jump with personal best clearances of 1.93 meters and 1.88 meters, respectively.

Kyle Collins finished second in the 3,000-meter run (8:31.66), just half-a-second behind Cortland's Mitch Ryan (8:31.12). Zakk Hess (Newark, N.Y./North Rose-Wolcott) took third (8:36.11).

Saturday's women's highlights

Laura Morrison (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) finished second in the one-mile run (5:02.93), behind Oneonta's Rachel Shine (4:58.52). Stephanie Wojnowski (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) was 13th (5:23.73).

Hannah Kurbs (Lockport/Lockport) took 13th in the 3,000-meter run (10:37.89).
