The 26th annual Fredonia Summer Music Festival will be held from Sunday, June 26 through Saturday, July 2. The festival continues its tradition of excellence with the Honors Solo Vocal Camp for students interested in further developing their skills as a solo classical vocalist. The registration deadline is Monday, May 16.

The Band Camp is open to instrumental music students (winds, brass, and percussion) with performance opportunities in large ensembles, chamber music, jazz and more. Students in both camps will attend daily musicianship classes, participate in master classes, attend special evening performances, and have time for individual practice and recreation. Together, the two camps offer students currently enrolled in grades 9 through 12 outstanding quality and exceptional value.

Set on the beautiful campus and housed in the university’s School of Music, the Fredonia Summer Music Festival takes advantage of the campus’ first-rate facilities and world-class teachers. All of the festival faculty are professors or alumni at the university. Outstanding performers and teachers provide unique opportunities for learning, improving technical skills and expanding musicality.

In addition to band rehearsals, chamber ensembles and jazz groups, students will attend daily musicianship classes (such as music theory, conducting, music technology, African drumming, iPad ensemble and breathing gym/relaxation class), participate in master classes, attend special evening recitals, and have time for individual practice and recreation. The Fredonia Faculty Brass, Woodwind and Percussion ensembles will be featured during evening recitals.

Registration for the Fredonia Summer Band Camp is $770, which includes housing, meals, and a camp t-shirt. Commuters pay $415 (meals not included) or $545 (lunch and dinner included). The registration deadline is Friday, May 16. A limited number of scholarships are offered based on the instrumentation needs of the camp - most often for oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet, French horn, and low brass.

The Wind Symphony will be directed by Carl Mazzio, director of the Fredonia Wind Symphony and All College Band.

The Jazz Band will be directed by Bruce Johnstone, director of Jazz Studies at Fredonia. Mr. Johnstone, a well-known saxophonist, has performed with Maynard Ferguson, Dexter Gordon, The Woody Herman Band and many others.

Members of the Fredonia School of Music faculty will round out the Band Camp teaching roster, including: Dr. Susan Royal, flute; Dr. Sarah Hamilton, oboe; Dr. Andrew Seigel, clarinet; Laura Koepke, bassoon; Dr. Wildy Zumwalt, saxophone; Dr. Marc Guy, horn; Roderick MacDonald, trumpet; Carl Mazzio, trombone; Barry Kilpatrick, euphonium; Amanda Willard, tuba; and Tiffany Nicely, percussion. The Honors Solo Vocal Camp faculty will include Dr. Robert Strauss and other Fredonia voice faculty members.
